What is sound?

A sound or sound wave, is moving air that takes on the vibrations of an object, causing them to travel. The moving wavey sound waves enter our ears and go on a magical journey through our ear canal, bouncing on the ear drum and moving the tiniest bones in our ears (and in our entire body). The sound wave is firstly transformed into chemical form, and then into electrical impulses that travel to our brain.

Sound waves are measured cycles per second, or Hertz, and us humans can hear between 16Hz and around 16,000Hz. This span changes depending on lots of things. Children for example can hear upwards of 20,000Hz, and the older we get, the range that we can hear decreases… it’s just one of those things… BUT! Just because we can’t hear all the sounds at different levels, doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

Dolphins 🐬 on the other hand, have mega ears and can hear frequencies upward of 180,000Hz! They can definitely hear their mums shouting 'dinners ready!' Everything around us is vibrating and creating sound waves, we just don’t hear them all. Imagine how noisy it would be if we could...
